Trend To Try: Hot Yoga
What is hot yoga? Well it's basically regular yoga but the studio's temperature is heated 90 to 117 degrees many experienced yogi's call this type of practice Bikram. Bikram consists of 26 poses and students believe that the heat will provide a deeper stretch without causing injury. If you have never tried hot yoga before you will be shocked to find out that the back of your knees, your elbows and everywhere else will be sweating like crazy.
Some facts to know:
Make sure you drink water 30 minutes before class, immediately before class, and hydrate as necessary. This prevents dehydration and heat exhaustion from the extreme temperatures. During the class pay attention to your body and how you feel any sign of nausea, muscle cramping, lightheadedness, or confusion take a break and grab some water.
My take: When I went to my first hot yoga session I didn't know what to expect at all but I was overwhelmed by the heat that came out of the humidifier. As class wore on I stripped down to my sports bra and spandex shorts even then the sweat was pouring out me like crazy. I don't do well in extreme heat so the majority of the time I felt extremely uncomfortable and that I was slipping off my mat. (The next time I brought a towel!) But I felt that I was more flexible in the heat and by the end of class I sweated out a lot of water weight.
As I got in the car I felt relaxed and sweaty of course but when I got home I took the best cold shower and I vowed to go to hot yoga again.
